Super 8 was on Netflix Tonight!
Super 8 is that movie of mine that I hoped to see as soon as it came out. I had caught many of the previews at the movie theater and was looking forward to a great movie. Knowing it’d been written and directed by J.J. Abrams only fueled the fire and the expectations that I had set for this movie. Super 8 turns out to be a movie about a group of kids that witness an unusual train wreck, and fall in love.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t all that impressed with the story itself as it seemed to be more wrapped around the two kids falling in love than it did the actual theme of the movie, which was totally a mystery alien that was hidden in all of the screeners and for most of the movie. This part of the movie was immensely dissatisfying, and so much of it was left to the imagination that I found it a huge letdown. Now even though it was a huge letdown, there were aspects of the movie that I enjoyed. I was just expecting a whole lot more and got a whole lot of blah.
As it turns out the top-secret train was operated by the Air Force and contained an alien that they had knowingly held against its will for many years. It, of course, only wanted one thing, and that was to reassemble its ship and go home. Instead of helping the alien, the Air Force did everything it could to keep it on earth to study it and use it for experiments to create new technology. Being freed in this little town, the subterranean alien eventually generates enough power and builds enough from the little town surrounding it to reassemble its ship and leave Earth to return home.
IMDB has a rating of 7.2 listed for this movie. I’m only going to give it a six out of a possible 10 purely based on disappointment and the expectations that had been set when they promoted and advertised Super 8.
