Straczynski Quits Wonder Woman, Superman Comics
Reposted from Slice of SciFi:
“Babylon Five†creator J. Michael Straczynski has stepped down as the writer for D.C.’s Superman and Wonder Woman comics, according to Blastr.
Why you ask?
According to DC and Straczynski, it’s the evolving nature of comics. The “pamphlet†comic, which has been the form’s primary comics delivery system since the beginning, has become less and less significant over the years, with some even predicting its eventual death.
Straczynski’s “Superman Earth One†graphic novel was an instant sellout, went immediately into a second printing and got lots of media attentionâ€â€Âwhich obviously got Straczynski’s attention, too. So he’s decided that from now on, that’s where he’ll be focusing his scripting efforts.
It’s a shame that this is what it’s coming to, but essentially he’s right. Newspaper comic strips are going through the same problem as they’ve got no business model for an online switch. With JMS in particular, I’m sorry he’s dropping out of the race, it seemed like he had a real place to take Superman and I was enjoying hearing about it. However, I’ve heard and read a lot about Earth One and I have to say it sounds pretty interesting. As I collect Superman Origin stories, I’m gonna own it for no other reason than to keep it rolling.
The sad thing is, I think the vocal majority have pretty much decided the Superman origin story has been done to death. I’m always up for a new take, but honestly, it’s like we’ve been inundated with them in the past decade. Most people aren’t really enthusiastic about his “Grounded” storyline being 12 issues, but I’m enjoying them for what they are. Wonder Woman is the one that hurts for me on this. JMS was supposedly going to put her back on the map as one of the big 3 since she typically flies under the radar of pop culture. What’s he’s put in the works is interesting thus far, and I’d really like to see him finish it. I’m hoping whoever picks up’ the ball doesn’t decide to throw it off into left field.
